He married Vonnie Dea Atwood September 3, 1949 in Elmo, Utah. Later for eternity in Manti Temple, January 31, 1964. Don passed away on April 7, 2014. During grade school his family owned a country store and farm in Cleveland, Utah, where he was kept busy. When barley 19, he enlisted in the service of WW2 as a marine. He saw action in Guam, Saipan, and was with the second wave of amphibious tran sports on the island of Iwo Jima. He served heroically and received the Purple Heart as well as other awards. He was a machine gunner and sharp shooter. He was honorably discharged after 2 years of service in 1946 as a Corporal. After the wa r he worked in the family grocery store and farm and was a skilled butcher. He had his own malt shop in Cleveland, adjacent to the family store, while also working at Hiawatha Mine as a shuttle car operator. He also helped his father homestead a mountain property called “the park.” In 1953 he went to work on the oil rigs in Welliston, ND, then in Bonanza, Utah and finally to Riverton WY. Returning to Cleveland in 1956 he worked at meat processing fo r Gene Salmies, a grocery store, and the road department. In 1958 he bought a farm north of Huntington, set up a dairy, and raised cattle and sheep. He returned to coal mining in 1964 for several years with the LDS church mine and then retire d at the DesBee Dove Mine. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and camping with family and friends. He is survived by 5 of 7 children; daughter-in-law Irene Young Allred of Cleveland, Utah, Dawnette (Greg) Simmons of Vernal, Dick R (Raelene) Allred of Huntington, Jed D (Kim) Allred of Huntington, Ardyth (Marvin) Bell of Cleveland, and Vallene Al lred Rudd of Orangeville; 66 Grandchildren, 4 great grand children; sister Earlene Black of Huntington; sister-in-law Hazel Brasher Allred of Spring Glen; Eldeth (Greg) Wakefield of Price; brother Fred (DeCarma) Allred of Huntington. He was preceded in death by infant twin brother Dale; wife of 50 years Vonnie Dea Atwood Allred (separated); sons Ivan Scott and Troy E; parents Earl and Gladys Allred; brother Jack, brother-in-law Ross Black; nephew Dale Black; grandson Chad Bell ; 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 14, 2014, 11:00am, Heritage Funeral Home, 620 North Main St., Huntington, Utah. Interment will follow in the Cleveland City Cemetery |
