Note | søn af gmd. Christian Frederik Timmerbye og hst. Ane Marie Jørgensdatter - Odd Fellow Cem., Rio Vista, CA (Christensen Plot) Martin came here to the United States after the war, when Germany took Schleswig Holstien from Denmark. Rather than swear allegiance to the Kaiser, he chose to immigrant to the USA. Martin had baby blue eyes. Martin was in San Francisco, CA when the Golden Gate Park was started. He earned 50¢ a day working in the park. Martin also dug ditches for the streetcar tracks in San Francisco. At one time they ran a Hotel in San Francisco, CA. Two of there chi ldren were born behind Jessee Street. Martin applied for citizenship in 1873 he became a citizen in 1876. Martin and family lived in San Francisco for 4 years. Around 1875-1876 Martin & family relocated to Rio Vista, where he lived the rest of his life. He secured a position as a wharfferryer and agent for the steamers of the Southern Pacific and California Transportation Companies. Martin was a dye r – accountant on the dock. After a short time in Rio Vista he purchased land from Joseph Brunning. Martin was a man of few words and excellent judgment. His opinions were always worthy of considerations and his judgments were well respected. It was for these qualities that he was very active in the community, serving on the Board of Trustee s of the school board and varies fraternal and public offices of honor. Martin was stern, quick tempered but very kind and generous. Fond of hunting, reading and music. Martin was a member of the Rio Vista Lodge No. 180 Independent Order of Odd Fellows serving as the lodge treasurer for 5 years. At the time Rio Vista Incorporated in 1893 he was elected president of the Board of Town Trustees, an office he held un til his death in 1901. Julia, his daughter told the story of Martin had received a small rope burn on his right index finger when a horse was pulling away from him. It had developed into blood poisoning due to horse manure ( cleaning up after the horses and fish remain s from fishing). Funeral services took place in the home of Anne Christensen, his wife, conducted by the Congregational Church minister, Rev. C. C. Cragin. Martin was then laid to rest in the Societies Cemetery. (Masonic & Odd Fellow Cemetery). Anne left Denmark in 1869 going straight to Omaha, Nebraska, then to San Francisco, CA where she married Martin. She knew Martin in the old country. Anna was very fond of sewing, knitting and reading music. Granddaughter Emigh Margaret Christense n says she was even tempered, generous, kind and hospitable. Clever in dressmaking and costume designing. Wallace Brown grandson says she was mean she would beat him with a switch and was always arguing with daughter Julia and demeaning her. Anne moved to Canada to live with her daughter Martha Harvie for a short time and then moved back to Rio Vista. Anne was a very strong, strict and mean woman. 1880 Census Rio Vista, Solano Co, CA T9_83 FHL 1254083, Pg 437D, Enumerated Dist. 116, Image 0600 Christensen, Martin M 41 Wharfinger Den Den Den Annie F 30 wife Keephouse Den Den Den Fred M 8 son at school CA Den Den Marth F 7 dau CA Den Den Anna F 5 dau CA Den Den John M 3 CA Den Den Martin M 1 CA Den Den Smidt Peter M 18 Boarder Laborer Den Den Den |
